As eBay continues to grow its global platform—creating the most dynamic and diverse marketplace—various teams at eBay have approached us to help elevate their brand image and the experience of buying on eBay.
Our first project commission was to help launch the Authentication Guarantee program—creating an elevated brand image and experience for eBay’s most discerning customers and collectors.
In a second project, we were challenged with elevating the quality of eBay’s visual merchandising for ebay.com. We art directed new photography and created a comprehensive photo guideline, documenting merchandise across various product categories.
eBay’s Authentication Guarantee provides a service for buyers purchasing high-value products, offering multi-point inspections by third-party expert horologists and sneaker authenticators. We documented the process and directed a photoshoot for watch & sneaker authentication with a rich, editorial feel.
We designed a landing page for the program that piques interest, explains features and benefits, and imbues trust for the service. The identity and art direction were extended into a launch video.
The customer experience for watches Authentication takes the humble kraft shipper, and elevates the unboxing experience through the application of messaging, color, print materials, soft-goods, and an authenticity verification card.
The experience is designed to build anticipation and delight, all while instilling trust and confidence.
As an added bonus to buyers who participated in the authentication process, we created a custom watch case and pillow that served to protect newly authenticated purchases and as a memorable keepsake that reflected a luxury experience, tailored to meet the needs of these discerning buyers.
Visual Merchandising Standards
In a subsequent project, we were tasked with exploring new creative approaches and techniques for visual merchandising across a wide range of product categories on ebay.com. After an extensive visual audit, we uncovered a lack of quality in their visual merchandising due to a lack of depth in the brand guidelines. Too much imagery was being created in photoshop with manufactured drop shadows resulting in inauthentic imagery.
We advised eBay to instill new practices and standards for photography, conducted a photoshoot to find new ways to present products in a more elevated and dynamic manner—all while remaining true to the vibrant nature of the brand identity. Through extensive documentation, we created a photo-standards document to help guide future art direction.
Testing the range of eBay’s design system generated a spectrum of approaches of how to best use color backgrounds to create more dynamic, elevated layouts for visual merchandising.
