Manual renewed our partnership with Strava to celebrate athletes’ 2021 journey with a personalized and data-driven experience, displayed through a series of animations. When accessing the Year in Sport experience natively within the Strava app, athletes can easily review how they’ve performed the entire year as well as share their personal bests and highlights across social channels. Alongside the Strava team and animator Sander Van Dijk, we mapped out the story of the Year In Sport personalized experience, and explored how data could take shape through design, ultimately conveying athletes’ data in a dynamic, celebratory format. We brought each data-point to life via code-driven full screen animations that presented athletes’ unique data in colorful, dynamic, animated scenes.
Strava Year in Sport is centered largely on the personalized experience. Delivered to more than 95 million athletes within the Strava community, the personalized experience is the ultimate trophy in an athlete’s trophy case. Strava saw 1.8 billion activities uploaded in the last 12 months and 37 million uploads per week versus last year’s 21.5 million uploads per week (+72%). Our job was to make the athlete feel truly incredible—this is Strava’s gift to athletes, celebrating and memorializing their effort and achievements across yet another uniquely trying year.
We employed a graphic language based upon intersecting shapes to reveal new color relationships, and ‘activate’ standout data moments. This served as a metaphor for the ‘bright spots’ that were celebrated throughout a year of ups and downs.
Communications utilized a diagonal crop derived from the Strava logo to serve as a bold and dynamic graphic device for title screens transitions, digital banners, and social posts.
Alongside the personalized experience we translated all the data logged by athletes in the app into a press report that summarizes and presents the larger trends across different countries and activities in a compelling but digestible manner.
