Eighteen B
Eighteen B is a contemporary sustainable skincare brand that harnesses the power of silk – one of the strongest materials in the natural world – to reinforce the natural skin barrier. Their products are developed by a team of female-led scientists that believe that better skin is possible through better science.
We were tasked with forging a holistic view of the brand, from developing a graphic personality, to the creation of product packaging, e-commerce experience, and brand art direction.
The name Eighteen B references the high molecular weight protein made up of a series of 18 repeating molecular segments. The typographically-led graphic identity leans into the scientific nature of the product with bold numeric 'super-graphics' overlayed with delicate and utilitarian monospace typography.
For secondary packaging we developed an all paper-fiber molded pulp box system. The soft and naturally tactile nature of substrate contrasts with a form factor that is both engineered and precise.
In addition to providing a premium unboxing experience for users, the pulp substrate of the box is fully compostable. The addition of belly-bands provides both a subtle hit of color and space for product information, instructions, and ingredients.
The soft color spectrum is rooted in biology and inspired by the refraction and iridescence found in nature. Underlying the brand's inspiration are the wing of a dragonfly or butterfly, the sheen of a shell, the spectrum of light when the sun hits a spiderweb, ice crystals under a microscope.
The overall design language is an exercise in contrast and balance: bold yet subtle, aspirational yet accessible, monochromatic yet colorful, elevated yet sustainable, clinical yet natural.
