Envelope
Envelope is an idea-driven architecture and activations studio; a hybrid practice intent on realizing an equitable and compelling built environment. As a small but ambitious studio in the bay area, their process is collaborative and experimental, with a focus on searching out flexible, immersive, and holistic design solutions that are specific to the needs of their clients and communities.
We designed a logo that captures their versatility, playfulness, and fascination with the mutability of space as a platform for interaction. The “Envelope” flexile is a fluid container that changes in response to a force of push and pull with its shuffling letterforms. This dynamic quality echoes the studio’s belief that space is an organic concept informed by unexpected relationships, interactions, people and experiences.
To accommodate Envelope’s wide range of projects, we devised a type-stacking system for composing their titles. Each typographic formation is unique and demonstrates the variety of forms that Envelope can take.
Hybrid Practice: Envelope’s practice is a blend of architecture and activation. They often inhabit multiple, intersecting roles, acting as two sides of the same coin.
Spaces as Platforms for Interaction: Envelope designs for activity, believing that uses make spaces and that designs don't exist until things are happening inside of them.
Convergence of Many Networks: Envelope's best work arises in response to and in concert with collaborators and peers — craftspeople, strategists, thinkers, artists.
Each member of the studio receives a set of business cards with 5 logo variations on the front.
Through Artivive, the static surface of each business card may be activated to show an animated logo in augmented reality.
We worked closely with Envelope to translate their plethora of ideas and projects into a unique portfolio site that highlights their ethos of multidisciplinary experimentation.
Envelope adopts a hybrid practice where ideas of all shapes and forms co-exist. The web experience allows users to peek into Envelope’s complex network of thought at every turn; starting with the home page, which features minimal typography as a springboard for users to quickly dive into various conceptual territories.
On the Work page, featured projects may be sorted by “Idea” or “Type”. The browsing experience branches into two streams: a conceptual window to Envelope’s ideas, or a more traditional presentation of work by industry and category. To capture the entire breadth and history of Envelope’s work, we included an “All Projects” section tailored to each filter category, which provides condensed overviews of a mix of featured and archive projects, as well as key project details for easy reference.
Case study pages are playful and immersive, with large photography, colorful drawers, and references. Concept keywords are hyperlinked; on hover, an image preview appears in the side panel, allowing users to jump to a relevant category of work, another case study, an external article, or to download a reference document. These links are automatically collected in the “References” drawer at the end of a case study, adding an undertone of research and intellectual connection.
The Studio page features Envelope’s studio philosophy, team, contact, and growing list of collaborators. Users may easily access specific projects under each name when browsing the “Team Bios” and “Collaborators” tabs.
