Wove

Wove was an experimental wearable product brand conceived and prototyped by Polyera, a flexible electronics company. The Wove band featured a flexible always-on touch display that could either lay flat or wrap around a wrist, and brought digital content into the material world. Much like a Kindle display's e-ink technology, the Wove Band displayed graphics in 16 shades of grey.

Manual worked to position the Wove Band as a product and platform for digital artists, designers and developers to build upon. The collision of technology, media, and fashion led us to create a design language that was unconventional, customizable, and personal.

At the core of the brand identity is the logo—a flexible and dynamic wordmark designed for digital media. The shifting weight of individual characters and randomized visual appearance conceptually echoes the nature of the display which is completely customizable and ever-changing. In digital, the logo flickers and shifts weights through simple animation.

Wove runs compositions, which are like apps, but made for wearing. With Wove’s creation tools users could make compositions that combined aesthetics and utility in new ways. Manual worked closely with the Wove team to explore the graphic language for the user interface – from typography, to patterns, iconography, and visual expression. We expressed these in a series of compositions, designed to inspire and demonstrate how content can be expressed on a display that is roughly five times the surface of a smartwatch.

A set of patterns, derived from the logo’s characters, was used in the product's user interface as a placeholder for a user's custom content.

For the limited edition prototype packaging, we leveraged digital printing technology to render our ever-changing logo so each box was unique. An unusual unfolding packaging structure echoed the flexible nature of the product. The rigid soft-touch box snapped open via a concealed magnetic closure (a nod to the magnetic closure on the band itself) and unwrapped to lay flat. The box opened to reveal a layered natural wool felt structure that protected and presented the contents.

Within the first week of the website's launch, Wove received over 10,000 applications for a prototype.
