New Client: The Glasgow Distillery

Manual is delighted to be working with a new distillery in Scotland. Currently in development for a 2015 opening, The Glasgow Distillery will be a cultural destination featuring the city’s only single malt whisky distillery, the first in over a hundred years, and an immersive educational experience that celebrates the history of Scotland’s national drink.

The site is located in the Old Pump House along the banks of the river Clyde in the heart of Glasgow’s historic dockland. In the past, this building controlled the entry gate into the Queen’s dock, ensuring Customs and Excise officers could keep a close eye on goods going in and out, including Scotch whisky

The project is in development by a group of industry experts led by Tim Morrison, formerly of Morrison Bowmore Distillers and founder of the AD Rattray Scottish Whisky Company. Mr Morrison said: “We see this project as having huge potential – not only for Glasgow but for the tourism industry, the whisky trade and the whole Scottish economy.

Letterform Archive talk: Color as Character

Last week we filled a room at Letterform Archive for Tom Crabtree’s salon talk, Color as Character.

Surrounded by a chromatic array of artifacts pulled from the Archive’s collection, Tom traced a path from early sources of inspiration to the identities we create today, with color as the main character throughout. Along the way: a rainbow sweater from childhood, fluorescent screen prints from college, and a kaleidoscopic mix of historical influences, including David Hockney, Eduardo Paolozzi, Piet Zwart, Otl Aicher, and Wim Crouwel.

The evening offered a personal look at Tom’s relationship with color, and the role it continues to play in shaping the way we design at Manual.

Thanks to everyone who came out, and to our friends and neighbors at Letterform Archive for hosting, especially Stephen and Angie.
